Quarr Abbey

Quarr Abbey
Quarr Abbey is a working Benedictine monastery set in peaceful countryside between Ryde and Wootton. The current red-brick abbey was built in 1912 in a striking French Gothic style, though the site’s history goes back to the original medieval abbey founded in the 12th century.

Today, visitors can explore the abbey church, gardens, and the remains of the medieval abbey. The site is known for its tranquillity, making it a popular place for reflection and quiet walks. There are also farm animals, including pigs, which are always popular with children, as well as woodland and nature trails.

Quarr has a tea shop and farm shop selling local produce, including goods made by the monks. Art exhibitions and workshops are also held throughout the year, giving visitors another reason to return. The abbey remains a place of worship and community, offering a unique insight into monastic life on the island.

Opening times: Grounds open daily, free entry. Abbey church open from morning until evening.
