With over 100 donkeys and ponies, it offers visitors a chance to meet these gentle animals up close, learn about their care, and support the sanctuary’s mission to protect and improve the welfare of donkeys.

Key Features of the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary:

  1. Rescue and Rehabilitation - The primary mission of the sanctuary is to rescue donkeys and ponies from neglect, abuse, or situations where their owners can no longer care for them. Many of the animals have come from difficult backgrounds, and the sanctuary provides them with medical care, rehabilitation, and a loving home. Visitors can learn about the individual stories of the donkeys and see the positive transformation that the sanctuary has made in their lives.
  2. Meet the Donkeys and Ponies - One of the highlights for visitors is the opportunity to interact with the donkeys and ponies. The sanctuary is home to a variety of breeds, each with its own unique personality. Visitors can gently pet and feed them, under the guidance of staff, and learn about their habits and characteristics. The donkeys are friendly and enjoy the attention, making it a delightful experience for both children and adults.
  3. Scenic Grounds and Peaceful Setting - Set in beautiful, rolling countryside, the sanctuary’s grounds are spacious and serene, providing the perfect backdrop for a relaxing day out. There are numerous paddocks where the donkeys can graze and socialize, as well as paths where visitors can stroll and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The sanctuary is designed to be a tranquil refuge for both the animals and visitors, offering a sense of calm and connection with nature.
  4. Educational Exhibits and Talks - The sanctuary offers a range of educational displays and regular talks to help visitors learn more about donkeys, their behavior, and the challenges they face. Staff and volunteers are always on hand to answer questions and share insights into the daily care of these animals. Through these educational programs, the sanctuary aims to raise awareness about animal welfare and encourage responsible pet ownership.
  5. Adopt a Donkey Program - Visitors have the opportunity to support the sanctuary by adopting a donkey. The adoption program allows people to contribute to the care and wellbeing of a chosen donkey by providing a donation that goes towards their food, shelter, and medical care. Adoptive supporters receive a certificate, a photo of their donkey, and regular updates, making it a meaningful way to stay connected with the sanctuary’s work.
  6. Cafe and Gift Shop - The sanctuary has a cozy cafe where visitors can relax and enjoy a range of refreshments, including homemade cakes, sandwiches, and hot drinks. The cafe overlooks the paddocks, so you can watch the donkeys while you unwind. There’s also a gift shop with donkey-themed merchandise, including plush toys, books, and locally made crafts. Proceeds from the cafe and gift shop go directly towards supporting the sanctuary.
  7. Events and Fundraising Activities - Throughout the year, the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary hosts various events and activities to raise funds and engage the community. These may include open days, fairs, educational workshops, and fun family events like Easter egg hunts or Christmas celebrations. The events are designed to be entertaining while also spreading awareness about the sanctuary’s mission and the importance of animal welfare.
  8. Volunteering Opportunities - The sanctuary relies on the support of volunteers who help with everything from feeding and grooming the donkeys to maintaining the grounds and assisting in the cafe. For those who want to get more involved, volunteering is a rewarding way to contribute to the care of these wonderful animals and learn more about their needs.

5 star stay at the island retreat. We enjoyed a weeks stay here and loved it. The caravan held more than the essential things, including a coffee machine, air fryer and TV. The oil heaters kept the caravan warm whilst we were out, so the caravan was always nice and cosy for us on return from days out. The caravan was clean and tidy and an easy check in and check out system. We also thought the welcome pack was a fab idea as we hadn’t yet done a food shop before we arrived so it was nice to have a hot brew after a long journey. There was so many things to do in the area in general but most importantly activities and walks were dog friendly so our gorgeous pup Ronnie enjoyed his holidays too. We could have definitely had another week here, we will be booking again.

5-Star Review for Isle of Wight Stays in SandownWe had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Isle of Wight Stays caravan in Sandown! From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. The caravan was spotless, well-equipped, and very comfortable, with everything we needed for a relaxing break. The location is perfect, just a short walk to the beautiful Sandown Beach and close to the island’s main attractions – it made exploring so easy and enjoyable. We especially loved the outdoor deck area, which was ideal for enjoying our morning coffee or a quiet evening. The hosts were wonderful too – responsive, friendly, and thoughtful, even leaving a lovely welcome pack with some local treats! It’s a perfect spot for families, couples, or anyone looking to unwind by the sea.
