Red Squirrel Trail

Description

The Red Squirrel Trail is a scenic, family-friendly cycling and walking trail on the Isle of Wight that celebrates the island’s beloved native red squirrel population. Winding through 32 miles of beautiful countryside, coastal paths, and woodland areas, the trail offers both short and long routes ideal for cyclists and walkers of all abilities.

Key Highlights of the Red Squirrel Trail:

  1. Picturesque Route - The trail meanders through some of the Isle of Wight’s most breathtaking landscapes, including the riverside paths along the Medina and Eastern Yar rivers, lush woodlands, and charming villages. Along the way, visitors are treated to views of the island’s rolling hills, serene wetlands, and rustic countryside.
  2. Wildlife Sightings - True to its name, the trail passes through habitats ideal for spotting red squirrels, which are thriving on the Isle of Wight due to the absence of grey squirrels. Other wildlife you may see along the way includes a variety of bird species, butterflies, and wildflowers, making it a nature lover's paradise.
  3. Flexible Routes - The Red Squirrel Trail consists of multiple sections that can be adapted to suit different preferences and skill levels. The main route is a circular track that starts and ends in Cowes and Newport, with detours to Sandown, Shanklin, and Godshill, creating options for both shorter family-friendly loops and longer, more challenging rides.
  4. Cyclist-Friendly Facilities - With smooth, well-marked paths, bike rentals, and plenty of rest areas along the way, the trail is very accessible for cyclists. There are also cafes, pubs, and picnic spots scattered along the route, providing ideal spots for breaks and refreshments.
  5. Historic and Cultural Stops - The trail passes close to some of the island’s cultural landmarks, including Quarr Abbey, Carisbrooke Castle, and the Newport Roman Villa. These stops add a touch of history to the journey, making it enjoyable for families, history buffs, and casual explorers alike.

An Eco-Friendly Adventure

The Red Squirrel Trail is part of a sustainable tourism initiative, promoting environmentally-friendly travel around the island. Whether you’re cycling, walking, or even running, it offers an enjoyable and active way to experience the island’s natural beauty while protecting its unique wildlife.

5 star stay at the island retreat. We enjoyed a weeks stay here and loved it. The caravan held more than the essential things, including a coffee machine, air fryer and TV. The oil heaters kept the caravan warm whilst we were out, so the caravan was always nice and cosy for us on return from days out. The caravan was clean and tidy and an easy check in and check out system. We also thought the welcome pack was a fab idea as we hadn’t yet done a food shop before we arrived so it was nice to have a hot brew after a long journey. There was so many things to do in the area in general but most importantly activities and walks were dog friendly so our gorgeous pup Ronnie enjoyed his holidays too. We could have definitely had another week here, we will be booking again.

5-Star Review for Isle of Wight Stays in SandownWe had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Isle of Wight Stays caravan in Sandown! From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. The caravan was spotless, well-equipped, and very comfortable, with everything we needed for a relaxing break. The location is perfect, just a short walk to the beautiful Sandown Beach and close to the island’s main attractions – it made exploring so easy and enjoyable. We especially loved the outdoor deck area, which was ideal for enjoying our morning coffee or a quiet evening. The hosts were wonderful too – responsive, friendly, and thoughtful, even leaving a lovely welcome pack with some local treats! It’s a perfect spot for families, couples, or anyone looking to unwind by the sea. We’re already looking forward to booking our next stay. Highly recommend Isle of Wight Stays for a memorable, stress-free getaway! 🌊🌞
