Description

Shanklin Chine is a stunning natural gorge and one of the Isle of Wight's most cherished landmarks. Located in the heart of Shanklin, this lush, green ravine has been attracting visitors for over 200 years, making it the island's oldest tourist attraction. Carved by a stream that flows from the downs to the beach, the chine is a tranquil oasis filled with dense vegetation, waterfalls, and winding paths that lead you through a serene and picturesque landscape.

Highlights of Shanklin Chine:

  1. Breathtaking Scenery - As you wander through the chine, you'll be surrounded by rich, tropical-like foliage, ferns, and moss-covered rock faces. The gorge is cool and shaded, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the town. Along the way, you'll encounter charming wooden bridges and cascading waterfalls that add to the magical feel of the place.
  2. Historic Significance - Shanklin Chine has a rich history, having been a popular spot for artists, writers, and poets over the years. It played a unique role during World War II, when it was used by Allied forces to lay PLUTO (Pipeline Under the Ocean), which supplied fuel across the English Channel for the D-Day landings. Visitors can learn more about this history through displays and information boards.
  3. Evening Illuminations - One of the most enchanting features of Shanklin Chine is the evening illuminations during the summer months. As dusk falls, the entire chine is lit up with soft, colorful lights, creating a magical atmosphere. Walking through the gorge at night under the glow of the lights is an unforgettable experience.
  4. Flora and Fauna - The chine is home to a diverse range of plant life, including rare and exotic species. The microclimate in the gorge supports an array of beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs. It’s also a habitat for wildlife like birds, squirrels, and butterflies, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers and photographers.
  5. Tea Gardens and Viewing Points - Along the paths, you'll find charming tea gardens where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. There are also several viewing points that offer stunning vistas of the chine and the coastline beyond, perfect for taking in the scenery and snapping a few photos.

5 star stay at the island retreat. We enjoyed a weeks stay here and loved it. The caravan held more than the essential things, including a coffee machine, air fryer and TV. The oil heaters kept the caravan warm whilst we were out, so the caravan was always nice and cosy for us on return from days out. The caravan was clean and tidy and an easy check in and check out system. We also thought the welcome pack was a fab idea as we hadn’t yet done a food shop before we arrived so it was nice to have a hot brew after a long journey. There was so many things to do in the area in general but most importantly activities and walks were dog friendly so our gorgeous pup Ronnie enjoyed his holidays too. We could have definitely had another week here, we will be booking again.

5-Star Review for Isle of Wight Stays in SandownWe had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Isle of Wight Stays caravan in Sandown! From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. The caravan was spotless, well-equipped, and very comfortable, with everything we needed for a relaxing break. The location is perfect, just a short walk to the beautiful Sandown Beach and close to the island’s main attractions – it made exploring so easy and enjoyable. We especially loved the outdoor deck area, which was ideal for enjoying our morning coffee or a quiet evening. The hosts were wonderful too – responsive, friendly, and thoughtful, even leaving a lovely welcome pack with some local treats! It’s a perfect spot for families, couples, or anyone looking to unwind by the sea. We’re already looking forward to booking our next stay. Highly recommend Isle of Wight Stays for a memorable, stress-free getaway! 🌊🌞
