Carisbrooke Castle
Carisbrooke Castle has guarded the centre of the Isle of Wight for over 900 years. Originally built as a Norman fortress, it later became the island’s main stronghold against French raids. Its most famous chapter came in the 17th century, when King Charles I was held prisoner here before his execution in 1649.

Visitors can walk the high castle walls, offering panoramic views over the island’s countryside, and explore the museum with artefacts from across the centuries. The Princess Beatrice Garden, designed in memory of Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter who once lived at the castle, is a peaceful highlight. Children enjoy meeting the donkeys that still operate the historic treadwheel, once used to draw water from the deep well.

Events are held throughout the year, including medieval re-enactments and family activity days, bringing the castle’s long history to life. With its combination of royal stories, military history, and interactive displays, Carisbrooke offers something for all ages.
