Planning an Isle of Wight escape for November 2026? Leave a little room in your itinerary for a slower woodland wander. Borthwood Copse, near Winford, offers a different side of the island from its beaches and seaside towns.
A short woodland route
The National Trust publishes a 1.2-mile red-squirrel walk, with a suggested duration of 45 minutes. Allow longer if you prefer to pause and watch the wildlife.
The route starts at the Parish Council car park off Alverstone Road. Check the official directions and route before travelling. Although the Trust rates the walk easy, paths can be uneven and muddy, and it says they are not wide enough for easy wheelchair use. Choose footwear and a route suited to your group.
Look up, slow down
Red squirrels live in the woodland canopy. The Trust notes that they can be easier to spot after leaf fall. They do not hibernate. Watch quietly from a distance and enjoy the woodland even if its residents stay hidden. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Autumn colour varies with the weather and the timing of your visit. Check conditions before setting out, keep to suitable paths and avoid disturbing wildlife.
